“Moon Bird” a fruity and floral drink for precious moments

Voted best organic product of the year in 2016, our Moon Bird green tea, with its notes of pear and elderflower, packed with taste and local colour, is particularly enjoyed for its sweetness, full flavour and refreshing qualities.

A delicious blend of organic green tea with flavours from Alsace

With its tasty combination of elderberry and pear, this « militant recipe » on a base of green tea (certified organic and Fair Trade) and sprinkled with sunflower petals evokes the many delicious treasures to be found on a stroll through the water meadows – or ‘Rieds’ –  of Alsace.

This in-house recipe is perfect for all kinds of cosy get-togethers, whether in summer or winter, because a cup of Moon Bird is an excellent accompaniment to a tea time treat of fruit tart, biscuits or any other sweet nibbles (especially around Christmas time!).

A tasty brew that supports the bird which is a symbol of the Alsace region

With its beak in the shape of a crescent moon to allow it to catch insects and other molluscs from the bottom of the mud, the Eurasian curlew – nicknamed the « moon bird » – is the symbol of the water meadows of Alsace (known as Rieds), which are places of incredible biodiversity.

In order to protect this bird and allow it to nest in its fragile environment, Jardins de Gaïa has decided to help the LPO (League for the Protection of Birds) by creating Moon Bird, an organic and fair trade green tea with local colours that blends passion and a desire to raise awareness.

As with all the teas in the Militant Teas and Herbal Teas range – a range born from the idea of combining ecology and fundraising through supporting partner associations that work for good causes – Jardins de Gaïa donates €1 and 50 cents respectively to the LPO (the League for the protection of Birds) for each tube or packet sold.

The measures put in place seem to be bearing fruit as the Moon bird’s territory has expanded in recent years to beyond the German border.

A refreshing recipe idea: how to make this flavoured green tea into a delicious homemade iced tea?

In a porcelain or glass teapot, infuse four teaspoons (approx eight grams) of “Moon Bird » in half a litre of simmering filtered water (for this tea, the correct temperature is 75°C – don’t bring the water to a boil, it will scald the tea leaves and your tea will be bitter!).

Leave to infuse for the time indicated on the sachet (in this case three to four minutes) and strain.

Once the tea is brewed, pour it into a jug filled with ice cubes and drink.

To make this recipe into a homemade mocktail (alcohol-free cocktail), add a little pear or mango juice and it’s ready to taste.

Tip: If you don’t have a kettle, it’s also possible to brew this tea from cold:

  • Using cold water: to prepare your brew, put the tea in a tea ball or in a tea filter, then place in a glass or porcelain teapot with a lid and leave to infuse overnight in the refrigerator
  • At room temperature: brew your tea at room temperature for three to four hours in a carafe with a lid
