Visit to Les Galopins de Calcutta

Les Jardins de Gaïa founder Arlette Rohmer is travelling in India, where she goes regularly to visit the tea gardens and taste the latest harvest, to catch up with producers and hear about their current projects, to share hundreds of cups of tea and to choose new Indian teas to for you to enjoy.

Before travelling to Darjeeling in the northeast of this vast country, she stopped off in Calcutta, to visit “Les Galopins de Calcutta”, an organisation we have been supporting for three years.
Calcutta is India’s third-largest city with more than 15 million inhabitants, including 100,000 street children. “Les Galopins de Calcutta” was set up in 1999 to support them in their daily life and offer them a better future than one spent getting by day by day on the streets of the city or on the platforms of the central station. Two boarding houses were opened in 1999 to accommodate children and adolescents and to put a good education at the centre of their lives.

It was a chance to hear from Sanju, an 18-year-old man sponsored by Arlette’s daughter, Chloé. It was a visit which allowed us to make our commitments to the organisation even more relevant before continuing on to the north and the foothills of the Himalayas where the tea plants are slowly growing…
